Language, Literacy & Vocabulary en español—Reading Expeditions provides manageable, ongoing assessment options so that changes over time in students’ learning can be noted. The program includes both formal and informal tools so that the evaluation of performance is reliable and useful. Each title in Language, Literacy & Vocabulary offers opportunities for both formal and informal assessment in the teacher's guide.

Formal Assessments

Pre-Tests and Post-Tests The Learning Masters for each title include Pre-Tests and Post-Tests to measure students’ content knowledge before and after reading the book. The tests focus on the Key Concept Words, big ideas and essential information that supports those ideas. Teachers can compare Pre-Test and Post-Test results to measure growth in understanding essential grade-level content.

Informal Assessments

Performance Assessment The Progress Tracking Form is used to record observations of students’ academic progress as they read, write, listen and participate in discussion while engaged with each title. This is a valuable tool that can be used throughout the year to measure progress over time and share adequate yearly progress with other educators and students’ family members.

Student Self-Assessment Provides students with opportunities to reflect on their learning and empowers them to become independent learners. The Student Self-Assessment invites students to think about what they learned and how they learned. It can help students celebrate their achievements and set goals for future learning.

Writing Assessment The Research and Write lesson in each book provides opportunities to measure growth in developing writers. It is essential that students include samples of their writing in portfolios and periodically conference with their teachers to review their work and set writing goals. A Scoring Rubric provides guidance in evaluating the work of students at different levels of language proficiency.
